Remember the epic royal blue Atelier Versace gown January Jones wore in 2010? It was, for me, the most striking look on the red carpet that year. The dress was bold and her hair and makeup were so simple, ah it just made so much sense. This Prabal Gurung look certainly fits that formula, as well. January has somehow managed to make the most overwhelming looks seem so put together, as if how she’s wearing it is just how the designer imagined.
Matthew McConaughey is one lucky man for many reasons, but seeing as he calls Woody Harrelson a friend and Camila Alves his wife is almost unfair. Camila is beyond stunning in her Zuhair Murad white cutout gown, and she easily outshines her husband (as she should). Woody and Matthew on the other hand, I kind of dig it. It seemed like every “fashion critic” thought they should be wearing traditional black tuxedos, but I think their color and style choice shows that they’ve paid their dues, proven themselves, and can, basically, do whatever they want at this point. Did you guys catch Jimmy Kimmel’s 2 minute roast of McConaughey? It was probably the funniest part of the entire show. “You beautiful sonofabitch.”
It was a huge night for American Horror Story: Coven. Both Queen Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates (who haunted my dreams for weeks after the first episode aired) took home Emmys. Jessica was elegant as ever in her black J. Mendel gown. The woman is flawless, and I would gladly listen to her read the phone book. Let us not ignore Sarah Paulson who always delivers on the red carpet, simply because she isn’t afraid of less traditional designs. Her Armani Prive gown is beautiful, and frankly, it’s just fun to look at.
I keep a running list of “people I don’t know personally, but wish I did” in my head, and Amy Poehler remains my number one. She is the living embodiment of everything I want to be as a woman. She is, of course, geniusly smart and funny, but she seems like one of the most genuine people you could meet. We normally see Amy in more muted colors, so I love that she chose a brilliantly silver v-neck Theia gown.
Sarah Hyland and Lena Dunham – similar look, wildly different in the details. Both are wearing neutral structured tops and voluminous corally pink skirts, but do so in ways that speak to their personalities. Sarah’s Christian Siriano two-piece gown is the perfect combination of fresh and smart, a beautiful representation of how young actresses should dress. Lena in this Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown just makes sense, doesn’t it? One of the many reasons I look forward to award season is to see what Lena wears. She always finds pieces that speak to her boldness.
I often feel like I’m the only person left who doesn’t watch Orange is the New Black. It’s not that I don’t want to, it’s just that I haven’t had the opportunity to. I have a hard time separating Taylor Schilling from her role in that movie with Zac Efron, but I digress. One of my favorite looks is understated elegance, and Taylor is just that in this ivory Zuhair Murad halter gown. It’s so intricate, yet simple. Uzo Aduba does quite the opposite in Christian Siriano. WOW. The cut of the dress is perfect for her body shape, and the color emanates power. I could stare at her for hours.
Lizzy Caplan in Donna Karan Atelier is breathtaking. The black portion would’ve been beautiful on its own, but the addition of the white train elevates it to a new level of gorgeous. It’s simple color-wise, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. I just love this look, it’s classicly beautiful. It reminds me of Grace Kelly.
Shout out to Julia Roberts for being one of the only actresses to wear a mini dress. To me, this choice says “I helped this movie get made, but really I’m just happy to be a part of its success.” The Normal Heart is an important movie, that probably should’ve won more awards. I think if Julia wore a statement gown it would’ve played off like she’s the shining star of the film, when really the shining star is the message of the film. In that sense, the Elie Saab mini is perfect. Plus, who are we kidding? It’s Julia Roberts, she looks excellent in anything.
And last, but never least, for your viewing pleasure, the gorgeous Kit Harington. Twitter exploded when he arrived on the red carpet rocking Emporio Armani and a “man bun” (a phrase I just can’t on board with). In my humble opinion, he looks great. It comes back to that whole idea of being polished, but not too polished. That’s the secret, that’s what makes an actor or actress on a red carpet look like they know what they’re doing. Going off subject, it always surprises me that Game of Thrones doesn’t get more award acknowledgment considering its complexity and the immense challenges just to film it. But what do I know?
