Monday Inspiration: Emma Watson’s U.N. Speech

Just six months ago, and fresh out of college, Emma Watson was appointed a United Nation’s Women Goodwill Ambassador. This past weekend, Watson gave a brilliant speech on feminism and more specifically the HeforShe campaign that focuses on inviting men of all ages into the conversation on gender equality. The eloquent 24-year-old British actress, and one of our most favorite people of all time, spoke thoughtfully and honestly, and touched on issues such as the word “feminism” and the connotations it holds, and how men, as well, are largely and unfairly affected by gender inequality.

It’s inspiring for us to see a young actress using her inordinate popularity for the greater good, and Emma Watson isn’t just famous — she’s “Harry Potter famous;” an altogether different level of stardom. In our opinion, Watson is the perfect person to be speaking on behalf of feminism and women’s rights. Her beloved character, Hermione Granger, taught young girls all over the world that it’s a wonderful thing to be smart, and clever, and many times, better than the boys. Hermione showed us that girls should be celebrated for their wisdom and their contribution to the world, and Emma Watson is doing just the same.
